Non-integrability of the restricted three-body problem

Abstract The problem of non-integrability of the circular restricted three-body problem is very classical and important in the theory of dynamical systems. It was partially solved by Poincaré in the nineteenth century: he showed that there exists no real-analytic first integral which depends analytically on the mass ratio of the second body to the total and is functionally independent of the Hamiltonian. When the mass of the second body becomes zero, the restricted three-body problem reduces to the two-body Kepler problem. We prove the non-integrability of the restricted three-body problem both in the planar and spatial cases for any non-zero mass of the second body. Our basic tool of the proofs is a technique developed here for determining whether perturbations of integrable systems which may be non-Hamiltonian are not meromorphically integrable near resonant periodic orbits such that the first integrals and commutative vector fields also depend meromorphically on the perturbation parameter. The technique is based on generalized versions due to Ayoul and Zung of the Morales–Ramis and Morales–Ramis–Simó theories. We emphasize that our results are not just applications of the theories.

Analytic smoothing of geometric maps with applications to KAM theory

We show that finitely differentiable diffeomorphisms which are either symplectic, volume-preserving, or contact can be approximated with analytic diffeomorphisms that are, respectively, symplectic, volume-preserving or contact. We prove that the approximating functions are uniformly bounded on some complex domains and that the rate of convergence, in C r -norms, of the approximation can be estimated in terms of the size of such complex domains and the order of differentiability of the approximated function. As an application to this result, we give a proof of the existence, the local uniqueness and the bootstrap of regularity of KAM tori for finitely differentiable symplectic maps. The symplectic maps considered here are not assumed either to be written in action-angle variables or to be perturbations of integrable systems. Our main assumption is the existence of a finitely differentiable parameterization of a maximal dimensional torus that satisfies a non-degeneracy condition and that is approximately invariant. The symplectic, volume-preserving and contact forms are assumed to be analytic.

Bifurcation of coisotropic invariant tori under locally Hamiltonian perturbations of integrable systems and nondegenerate deformation of symplectic structure

We study the bifurcation problem for a Cantor set of coisotropic invariant tori in the case where a Liouville-integrable Hamiltonian system undergoes locally Hamiltonian perturbations and, simultaneously, a deformation of the symplectic structure of the phase space. We consider a new case where the deformed symplectic structure generates a nondegenerate matrix of the Poisson brackets of action variables.

Invariant tori for non conservative perturbations of integrable systems

We prove some results on the persistence of invariant tori for non hamiltonian perturbations of integrable systems. We also obtain persistence for the case where the unperturbed torus is resonant. In such a case the persistence of invariant tori is ensured for \( \epsilon \) small, but outside of a neighbourhood of zero.

Nekhoroshev Stability in Quasi-Integrable Degenerate Hamiltonian Systems

Many classical problems of Mechanics can be studied regarding them as perturbations of integrable systems; this is the case of the fast rotations of the rigid body in an arbitrary potential, the restricted three body problem with small values of the mass-ratio, and others. However, the application of the classical results of Hamiltonian Perturbation Theory to these systems encounters difficulties due to the presence of the so-called ‘degeneracy’. More precisely, the Hamiltonian of a quasi-integrable degenerate system looks likewhere (I, φ) є U × Tn, U ⊆ Rn, are action-angle type coordinates, while the degeneracy of the system manifests itself with the presence of the ‘degenerate’ variables (p, q) є B ⊆ R2m. The KAM theorem has been applied under quite general assumptions to degenerate Hamiltonians (Arnold, 1963), while the Nekhoroshev theorem (Nekhoroshev, 1977) provides, if h is convex, the following bounds: there exist positive ε0, a0, t0 such that if ε < ε0 then if where Te is the escape time of the solution from the domain of (1). An escape is possible because the motion of the degenerate variables can be bounded in principle only by , and so over the time they can experience large variations. Therefore, there is the problem of individuating which assumptions on the perturbation and on the initial data allow to control the motion of the degenerate variables over long times.
